Fishing

The Coromandel is well known for its snapper fishing. Some even call it a ‘fisherman’s dream’. There’s a great all-weather, all-tide Waikawau boat ramp only a short distance away, where you can launch your boat. From there you are only 5 minutes away from the mussel farms where you have access to the best snapper fishing in the Coromandel. Mussel farms act as a source of food and shelter for marine life and is why the fishing is so good!

If you don’t have a boat, you can cast straight off the beach or if you’d like to organise a fishing charter, there are two local companies we recommend – Top Shelf Charters and Snapper Express.

Rapaura Water Gardens & Café

The award winning Rapaura Water Gardens are located on Tapu-Coroglen Rd, just 10 minutes from Tapu Camp. Fifty years in the making, the beautiful and pristine water gardens attract people from all over the world. Take a bush walk to the cascading waterfall and see native bush, ferns and abundant wildlife. There’s beautiful art installations scattered amongst the gardens as well as seasonal displays of exotic and native flowers throughout the year.

Mahara Sculpture Park

Set in the Tapu Valley just 8 minutes from Tapu is the Mahara Sculpture Park – a beautiful mix of human influence and the surrounding nature. Wander through the Sculpture Walk and see the amazing sculptures strewn throughout the native bush. Get a real sense of the Coromandel surroundings and everything it has to offer, all for just a gold coin donation.

Square Kauri Walk

Estimated to be 1200 years old, the square Kauri is one of the most beautiful and unique Kauri trees in the Coromandel Peninsula. Located just west of the Tapu-Coroglen Road summit, it is truly a site to be marvelled. The short but steep 187 steps will take you right to the base of the tree where you will get a beautiful view of the surrounding hills.

Swim in the fresh water swimming hole just up the river from the camp. Or just lay around and enjoy some family time. You can head across the road to the Royal Oak Hotel after a long day fishing or exploring and recharge for tomorrow’s activities. Enjoy a hearty pub meal, relax over some refreshments and wind down in the garden bar after a big day.

Tapu Camp is also conveniently located to surrounding towns. The historical town of Thames is just 20 minutes south where you have access to supermarkets, service stations, cafes, and many other activities like historical museums and exhibitions. Continue on north from Tapu for 30 minutes and you will reach the ‘Capital of the Peninisula’, Coromandel Town. Home to a wide range of arts and crafts, restaurants and cafes, tours, and more, Coromandel Town is the perfect place for anyone interested in exploring the Coromandel.
